Act Aht Aht - Talk Ya Shit Sis

Sis, Don’t Be Silent: Your Story Matters!

In 2025 we still exist in a world that’s hell bent on dimming out light, that is why it’s more important than ever to recognize the power in our own stories. Lovey Jones said it best: “Your silence about your accomplishments is not service; it is enabling your erasure.” And chiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllle, that’s a whole word! This isn’t just about tooting your own horn, it’s about owning your narrative and shaping our culture.

Erasure: When the World Tries to Write/White You Out

Erasure is what happens when we let others define us. It’s letting stereotypes and tired narratives box us in. When we stay silent about our wins, our struggles, our everyday lives, we’re basically letting other people tell our stories for us. And trust, their version ain’t gonna be nearly as dope as the real deal.

Sharing Our Stories: A Legacy of Strength

Every time we share our experiences, we’re dropping gems for the next generation. Our stories are survival guides, passed down through generations of resilience. When we talk about our pain, our wins, our everyday hustle, we’re building a bridge for our sisters coming up behind us. They see themselves in us, they learn what joy and strength look like in the face of adversity.

Speaking Up: Reclaiming Our Narrative

Let’s call a thing a thing, society loves to put Black women in a box. But every time we speak up – whether it’s at the kitchen table, on Instagram, or in a boardroom – we’re breaking those boxes down. We’re showing up as our full, authentic selves, and that’s a revolution in itself.

So, how do we become unapologetically ourselves?

  • Celebrate Your Wins: Big or small, sis, OWN THAT SHIT! Graduated? Got that promotion? Raised amazing kids? Told them folks to kiss your grits? Said fuck that job and took a self-care day? Shout it from the rooftops! Your wins add to the tapestry of our dopeness.

  • Share Your Struggles: Vulnerability is power. When you share your challenges, you not only show your human side but also let other Black women know they’re not alone. We build community when we keep it real.

  • Lift Each Other Up: Sharing the accomplishments of other Black women creates a space where we all shine. It’s about sisterhood and showing the world the power of our collective voice.

  • Join the Conversation: Speak up in discussions about Black womanhood. Your voice, your experiences, are valuable contributions to the dialogue.

  • Document Your Journey: Journal, blog, post – whatever your style, get your story out there! Writing is a powerful way to reflect and share your journey.

It’s Time to Break the Silence

We owe it to ourselves, and to the generations coming after us, to tell our stories. By speaking up, we honor our experiences, empower ourselves, and create a world where Black women are truly seen and heard.

Be bold, be loud, and most importantly, be unapologetically YOU. Your voice matters, and the world is waiting to hear it.

Now, let’s get introspective, sis:

  • What accomplishments are you most proud of, and how do they reflect your journey as a Black woman?

  • When have you felt silenced or erased, and how can you reclaim your narrative?

  • What challenges have you faced, and how have they shaped your understanding of resilience and strength?

  • Who are your role models, and what have you learned from their stories?

  • How can you create spaces to share your story and the stories of other Black women?

  • What fears or insecurities are holding you back from speaking your truth, and how can you overcome them?

  • How can you celebrate and document your journey, ensuring your experiences are recognized and valued?

Enjoy the journey, love on yourself and big up your sistas!
